Pixie Cut Tips from a Hairstylist

When you have a pixie you naturally get asked a lot of questions from what products to use, to how to style it. I am no hair professional, and it's taken a while for me to be able to give you hair tips since it's really not my forte. For that reason I decided to ask someone who knows a thing or two about hair. San Diego based beauty school Bellus Academy recently announced that one of their students, Terrell Mitchell, was just named the grand prize winner of Project Runway’s Photo Challenge. I was fortunate get the chance to ask the Project Runway's Photo Challenge winner about some of his pixie cut tips and tricks, and here's what he had to say!

Hi Terrell, I hope you're doing well. I am a local beauty, fashion, and lifestyle blogger here in San Diego who has a pixie cut. As you can imagine I get a lot of questions regarding the haircut and how to style it. I'm going to be asking you questions regarding pixie cuts so my readers can get a professional's perspective on it, as well as get some amazing styling tips.

1. What type of pixie cuts work best for specific face shapes?
For a round face, you would want to get a nice soft graduation; you're going to want some volume/ height to give you an elongated look. For an oval face shape, an oval face is considered the ideal face shape. It works with any style so you can pull off any kind of pixie cut. ;) For a heart shaped face, you want to get a pixie cut that’s flat to the sides (not too flat, you want a little volume) with a playful side bang to draw attention to your eyes and cheekbones.

2. What products do you recommend for short hair?
With short hair, depending on the look you're going for, you can use a pomade or a volumizing mousse. You have an advantage with having short hair because you can be creative and make a statement of who you are with your hair.

3. Can you share one or two easy ways to style your pixie?
For a client, depending on how her facial features I’ll give her a beautiful blowout with two different size round brushes; a small brush for the sides, nape, and sometimes the fringe, then switching to a medium size one for the crown and also the fringe if I didn't use the smaller one on it.

4. Which person in the entertainment industry has the best pixie cut in your opinion? The person can be dead or alive.
My all time favorite is the one and only Ellen Degeneres. She rocks that pixie; it brightens her face and brings out her blues eyes and her bright smile.

5. If you're on the stage when you want to grow your hair out, how would you go about it? Are there any tips to make the growing out process a little bit easier?
I would suggest wearing cute head accessories or maybe getting it cut into a cute hair cut. But not so short, just to help that stage bypass a little faster.

6. A lot of girls tell me that they wish they could get a pixie but they don't have the courage to do it or they feel like it won't look good on them. What would you tell someone who wants a pixie but is hesitant to take the plunge?
Go out and get a wig or a 27 piece weave (a really short weave) to try out a shorter hair style. That’s the best bet because you can always take off the wig later if you don't like having your hair that short.

I really hope you enjoyed the interview with Terrell. If you have more questions regarding pixie cuts just let me know in the comments below.
